Currently, DynCorp International holds the contract for Fire & Emergency Services at Kwajalein Atoll Army Garrison in the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
The $43.1 million base support contract has been modified several times since the award in early 2018.
The Fire Department operated 3 stations on 3 different islands, Kwajalein, Roi Namur, and Meck. Meck island is staffed intermittently with staff from Kwajalein. The department operates with 1 Fire Chief, 1 Deputy Chief, an AC of Fire Prevention, 3 AC’s of Operations, Crew Chiefs, Firefighters, and EMT’s. The Fire Department provides the following services: ARFF, Structural, Transport EMS, Shipboard, HazMat Tech, Confined Space, and Rope Rescue.
Housing, meals, and uniforms are provided. Housing is typically a bachelor quarters (studio apartment) For managers, it’s possible to obtain a housing with accompanied status.
The isolated nature of Kwajalein is sometimes a turn-off as getting on and off the island is sometimes a challenge. United Airlines is your only choice to get on and off the island and their pricing is a little high. Staffing issues have plagued Kwajalein for many years. There is typically plenty of overtime to be worked and at times the overtime is mandatory due to a high turn-over rate. Days off are sometimes hard to come by.
Otherwise, the island is beautiful. The beaches, boating, fishing, sailing, kite surfing, and scuba diving are world class. The island has an MWR, AAFES, Post Office, Burger King, Subway, Pizza place and a couple bars.
